Ericom has made a press-release which I believe is significant, yet may require some explanation: Ericom Announces the Only Desktop Virtualization (VDI) Solution that Directly Supports VMware's Free ESXi Hypervisor. Obviously Ericom's PowerTerm WebConnect is not the only VDI solution that supports the VMware virtualization platform. The difference is that all the other VDI products that support this platform, including VMware's own VDM product, require VMware VirtualCenter management server in order to control the individual virtualization servers (hypervisors). PowerTerm WebConnect, on the other hand, can control the virtualization servers either through VirtualCenter or directly, taking on itself the role of management server for desktop virtualization.
This difference between PowerTerm WebConnect and the other VDI products has been made especially significant by VMware's recent announcement that it releasing its ESXi virtualization server for free. VMware VirtualCenter is, and will remain, a commercial product that is not available free of charge. This means that PowerTerm WebConnect provides the only VDI solution that can be implemented on top of the industry's leading virtualization platform, without having to pay anything for the virtualization platform itself.

you write that ericom can manage vmware directly and using virtual center. are there any advantages to using virtual center?
VirtualCenter provides various services that are not available for VMware hypervisors without it. For example, VMotion requires VirtualCenter. For a list of these services check out the VMware website.
If you require these services for your VMware-based virtual desktop infrastructure then you need VirtualCenter. Otherwise you can use Ericom PowerTerm WebConnect to manage your infrastructure without it.
OK, so i'm trialing Webconnect Deskview and i'm wondering how to manage ESXi, it isn't an option you can choose in the VDI manager like Virtual Center or Xen, so how exactly does it work for ESXi?

In any event, as I indicated above, PowerTerm WebConnect is not a replacement for VirtualCenter. Rather it allows you to use ESXi as your virtual infrastructure in a VDI environment without VirtualCenter. It can perform operations directly on ESXi such as stopping and starting virtual machines.
